Das Leben im Haushalt der wohlhabenden Bellamys von 1903 bis 1930: Der Parlamentsabgeordnete Richard Bellamy und seine Frau Marjorie können sich dank ihres ererbten Reichtums ein großes Haus und einige Angestellte leisten. Doch um dieses und ihren gesellschaftlichen Status zu halten, sind sie dringend auf Richards Karriere angewiesen. Der Ruf der Familie wird immer wieder durch die Eskapaden ihrer beiden Kinder James und Elizabeth gefährdet. Auch die Hausangestellten der Bellamys kämpfen mit ihren eigenen Problemen. Hudson ist der schottische Butler, der einerseits eine Vaterrolle für die übrigen Angestellten einnimmt, andererseits aber auch sehr deutlich seine eigene Stellung im Haushalt betont. Im Verlauf der Serie tauchen häufig tagesaktuelle Ereignisse und Probleme der damaligen Zeit auf: Menschen sterben im ersten Weltkrieg, der Jazz und die Frauenrechtsbewegung treten ihren Siegeszug an. Lady Marjorie stirbt an Bord der Titanic, Richard heiratet später die schottische Witwe Virginia Hamilton.
